Improve Home Security While on Vacation for Peace of Mind
Before you pack the bags and head out on vacation this summer, make sure your home is safe and secure. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), approximately 35% of all home burglaries occur while homeowners are on vacation. These break-ins and burglaries are oftentimes preventable when extra measures are taken for home security. Learn a few of the easy ways to improve home security while on vacation.
1. Use a Home Security System
If you do not already have a home security system with monitoring in place, start comparing the options and have a system installed before your trip. Home security systems deter would-be criminals, considerably reducing the risk of a home invasion while you’re on vacation. Burglars simply do not want to take this added risk and will look for another home with fewer security measures in place.
2. Secure Windows & Doors
Approximately 40% of all burglars gain entrance into a home via the windows and the doors. Many burglars simply open the door or the window and come right in, helping themselves to their choice of your belongings in the process. It’s worth double checking that all the doors and windows are locked just before you leave your home. If window locks are not already in place, now is a great time to consider the addition. Inspect the locks on your door as well. If there are any defects, consider replacement.
3. Do Not Store a Spare Key
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is storing a spare key outside. Whether it is underneath the welcome mat or a nearby rock, burglars are keen to these spots and will not have any trouble locating these items. It’s best to never keep a spare key stored outside, but if you do, it is important to remove the key before you head off on vacation.
4. Shy Away From Social Media
We eagerly announce many of our plans to friends and family via social media, so there is little doubt you’re eager to share your vacation news. It is best to avoid posts until you arrive safely back home, but if you simply must share the news, do so carefully. Select the audience so only those closest to you see the photos and information. You do not want to invite potential burglars to your home by alerting them to your absence.
It is natural to feel uneasy when leaving your home and all of your possessions for a few weeks. Fortunately, extra measures can be taken that protect your home so that you can get the most rest and relaxation out of your vacation. Use the tips above to improve home security while on vacation, and you will greatly reduce the chances of returning home to an unpleasant surprise.
